How often should I change my oil?
From Mel’s Blog
Everyone knows that the oil in their car or light truck must be changed from time to time. But how often should you have your oil changed? And how should you measure when it is appropriate to have an oil change? Should it be based on time between oil changes, or should it be based on how many miles you put on your car or light truck between such changes?
Due to many factors, there is one-size-fits-all answer to when you should have your oil changed. In the past, the rule of thumb was that you should have your oil changed every 3,000 miles or every three months, whichever occurred sooner.

But the conventional wisdom on how often to have your oil changed has evolved somewhat over the past few years. This is partly due to the fact that ever-increasingly stringent emissions standards have resulted in car manufacturers producing engines that produce more heat and friction than ever before. However, car manufacturers have also utilized synthetic engine oils that are designed to accommodate such higher temperatures and to reduce engine damage due to higher friction. In addition, higher heat results in a slower accumulation of engine oil sludge, which theoretically makes it safer to go longer distances between oil changes. When used in combination with an effective oil filter, your engine can safely operate without dirt and sludge accumulation.
When factoring these considerations together, it is our recommendation that you should have your oil changed between 3,000 and 4,000 miles if you are using regular petroleum-based engine oil. If your engine is using regular oil, you should never go more than 5,000 miles before having an oil change. It is always best to follow the manufacturers instructions from their hand book provided with new car purchase.

If, on the other hand, you are using synthetic oil, you can safely travel slightly longer distances between oil changes. For engines using synthetic oil, we recommend that you get your oil changed every 5,000 to 6,000 miles. However, just because you are using synthetic oil does not mean you can travel indefinitely without an oil change. We recommend that you never allow your vehicle to travel more than 7,000 before having your synthetic oil changed.
